For nearly a month, the curb outside the Tijuana Marriott Hotel has been a gathering spot for those cheering on the Iranian national soccer team. The players, coaches and their support staff set up their base camp in the Mexican border city during their World Cup run and became overnight darlings of Tijuana.
ESPN called Iran's World Cup run "remarkable" despite the team failing to win a single match before their elimination from the tournament group.
Iran’s team is scheduled to play all its group games in the U.S., but it has set up its home base for the World Cup in Tijuana, Mexico.
"May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations," the team's message concluded.
Iran's soccer team thanked the people of Tijuana on Tuesday for their hospitality at the World Cup following the side's group-stage elimination, saying Mexico had become "our second home and our second ​team".
The Iran soccer federation (FFIRI) says it intends to lodge an official complaint with FIFA regarding its World Cup travel arrangements between its base camp in Mexico and games in the United States.
